"amazing sacrifices" when "called to do so". If you are talking about any US wars after the turn into the 20th century, you're talking about those conscripted (i.e. "called to do so"), among others, and those who died in aggressive overseas warmaking campaigns (i.e. "amazing sacrifices").
In the same thread as that OP, you've given examples of two individuals voluntarily committing to each other and then a group of local individuals voluntarily banding together to attempt a do-gooding goal.
The OP and those examples are incongruent. The most notable distinguishable elements between the OP and your two examples are: (1) voluntary action, (2) shared goal among all participants.
Also, I would have to spend a lot of time to come up with a worse example of a sacrifice "for the greater good" than this:
"One could give up eating out for a year so they can afford to buy something for their child."
That is a sacrifice for the good of your child, not the greater good.
