That is not a declaration of the individual in any way. Who determines better? Who determines worse? It appeals not to each as people but to some subjective claim to the state of their collective relationship.

All claims of "the greater good" do not involve what you state above. You appear to be taking one use of the term and applying it to all uses because the one causes you such concern. I would content that is excessively broad.
