I will agree with you on a few things
1. The mask mandate evidence is flimsy, and the results show no definitive result of whether it worked or not (although because mandates got stuck up in politics, no one has really studied why there are examples of both states with and without mandates that were on the "good" side and the "bad" side)
2. Whether masks work or not still should not give government the authority to do the mass shutdowns and mandates that did occur
From my recollection, those studies were done during "normal times"...not when there was a big surge in community spread of something aerosol to really put pressure on the system, and they also did not figure out a way to account for variability in either exposure or human behavior, which are two huge variables.
Anecdotally, it does seem that most of Eastern Asia seems to be less affected by COVID. It is difficult to know exactly. They are a more government complicit culture, but I do know, from experience, their mask culture is very different than ours. Their basic culture is if you are sick, or feel you have been exposed, you wear a mask. they are also a generally healthier culture versus much of the West as well, so that could be a contributor as well.
