They will be chosen and confirmed this year 3 weeks before the end of the season. Due to Covid testing protocols needing to be met, and verified well before the NCAA tournament. Schools apply to be regional sites and will be announced the week of April 26.
I’ve been focused on figuring out W/L and RPI wise where we will need to be to get a top 16 seed and home regional. But now the regional sites are decoupled from the seeding. Seeding is still important for match up purposes of course, but the focus really needs to be on Coach LA and Mizzou putting together a great case for Columbia to be selected. I’d say we have an excellent chance given the really good Covid protocols Columbia has and the robust testing with 2 major hospital systems in town.
This takes some pressure off being on a seed bubble of sorts. If Columbia gets chosen as a site due to our ability to meet the rigid Covid testing requirements, it doesn’t really matter as much if we are the 14, 15, 16 seed, we would host and be the #2 team on our home field even if we just missed being a top 16 seed.
Or, conversely, if Columbia was not chosen, we could be a top 16 seed but have to travel to a regional in another city.
Very interesting. So we now have two focuses, finishing strong to get a good seeding and draw, and putting together a great application to be a regional site, regardless.
