They would be equitable if the government FORCED every American to take out a loan and then offered relief from those loans.
The student loan crisis is basically a lack of common-sense tax. If you were intelligent and made good decisions then it does not affect you. Student loans are a tool and when used wisely they can help people who would not otherwise afford and education get a college degree. If you used student loans to get an English Lit degree from an Ivy League school then that is on you.
I do think schools should bear some of the responsibility here though. If you are offering degrees at your school that cost $500k but only open the door to $40k jobs you know that you are screwing students but at the same time, it is really hard to feel sorry for those students because that information is easily found.
I originally went to Mizzou for engineering, when I chose to switch to education I transferred to NWMSU because I could attend there for roughly 1/3 the cost.
