If you look at what they accomplished at Arkansas and Notre Dame, Frank Broyles and Dan Devine were the two best football coaches in school history.

Don Faurot retired as head football coach following a miracle win over KU to end the 1956 season. Mizzou was trailing 14-13 with no more than a couple of minutes left in the game and got a safety on a tackle in the KU end zone to win 15-14.

Faurot hired Broyles as his successor. Broyles was a highly regarded assistant at Georgia Tech under Bobby Dodd. Broyles went 5-4-1 his first season and then left for Arkansas where he won a natlional championship in the mid to late 60's. Broyles publicly commented after he left Mizzou that Mizzou folks had totally unrealistic expectations given what they were willing to put into the program.

Faurot hired Devine to succeed Broyles. Devine had won twenty-seven games at Arizona State in three seasons. Devine stayed at Mizzou for thirteen seasons. He left after the 1970 season, his only losing year at Mizzou. The reason he left was he asked for the same amount and level of support that Nebraska was giving to Bob Deveany and didn't get it. After five so so seasons in Green Bay, he took over Notre Dame and eventually won a national championship.

The bottom line is Tiger football has never been important enough to Mizzou, its administration, alums and fans to generate the same level of support that the Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas programs got in the Big Eight/Twelve or that numerous programs get in the SEC.
