They are a cash cow for all jurisdictions and have public support due to scare tactics.

Studies have shown that saturation patrols are more effective than checkpoints for getting drunk drivers off the streets BUT they only get drunk drivers not all of the other miscellaneous infractions that are caught at checkpoints.

I was in a car in my youth that was stopped at a checkpoint and the driver was arrested for drunk driving. The officer told us he would never have pulled us over if it were not for the checkpoint.
