If four teams is too exclusive, go to six. The #1 seeds take a bye, and the 3 vs. 6 match-up and 4 vs. 5 match-up are played on campus, with the better seeded team hosting. From there, we go to the 4 team playoff. If you go to an 8 team playoff, or worse yet a 16-team playoff, the regular season loses quite a bit of luster. In a 16-team format, Georgia's loss last weekend was an "Oh well" moment at best. Imagine the Ohio State vs. Michigan game being played and Ohio State has no losses and Michigan has 1. As of today, that is a virtual elimination game. In the 16-team world, Ohio State has no need to win that game. They could bench starters and hope to win, but the most they would lose would be a few notches on the seeding. If they truly are one of the best four teams, would a sudden drop to a 5 seed make that much of a difference? They would play an 11-seed and then a 4.
To be brief. Stop messing with the regular season. College football is great NOW because very week matters. Georgia is pooping bricks because they let a win escape them.
Who pays attention to regular season college hoops. By early January you know which teams are in, and the most excitement is finding out whcih teams cannot lose in order to gain a bid, which is hat we have NOW during the college football season.
