you can't tell parents to back their kids off of specialization or the AAU circuit while at the same time dangling the multi-million dollar signing bonuses and contracts to unproven teenagers.
The NBA has out-sourced player development to AAU, foreign academies and, less frequently, college basketball.
The NBA has a financial interest in healthy players. The foreign academies "should" have a financial interest in healthy players (because they make money by "selling" players). The college game has a financial interest in healthy players.
Only the AUU and the lower-level actors in the Shoe Companies are incented to rachet up early specialization and year round competition.
The NBA and NCAA is going to have to provide a different pathway to the pros and a different funding source than the current "system" that has taken over hoops in the US.
