We retroactively created a scandal to blame Haith and displace blame on Kim. It was executed very poorly, but the subset of fans it was designed to appease didn't really require it to be executed well to be believed.
MU investigated itself, and put itself on probation, and enacted self penalties. The NCAA accepted MU's decision to do this. Obviously an investigation was not occurring under the timeline that MU has suggested occurred, or everyone involved at MU acted in a completely illogical manner to their own detriment. The reason this makes no sense is because it didn't really happen that way.
Its similar to the ku explanations they propose when they are caught cheating. The reason they don't make any sense is because they are created retroactively and didn't really happen that way, but the audience they are designed to appease as an explanation don't really care if it makes sense or is plausible, they just want to explain something away.
