"Current black students find themselves regularly quizzed on campus life by concerned friends and family. “I kind of laugh at it,” says 6' 7" junior forward Kevin Puryear, whose freshman fall coincided with the ’15 meltdown. “I’ve never had a bad experience with racial issues.
“But after that incident, people have made it seem like this is just a racist school, like nobody likes black people here—and a lot have kind of shied away from going here. So I tell them: I love the school, people are nice, I’ve had good encounters. What happened at our school happens at a lot of other schools in the country. Ours just happened to be televised and brought to light.”
It’s all relative, of course. Puryear knows that he might not face the same rancor as (others)."
It is seldom mentioned that someone like KP brings a different mindset than Cuonzo, because the way they were raised, the environment, was very different. Some people see trouble because that is what they are expecting prior to arrival. Yes, he is in a privileged position of being a high profile athlete. But just being an athlete doesn't mean you never have to deal with such issues. It is more a matter of personal approach. If you are respectful, you generally get treated with respect. If you walk in pronouncing your entitlement, you might hear some responses.
