While the racial narrative is tired and overplayed, the real issue stems from an overwhelming lack of leadership and foresight at the time. I'm hopeful that has been eradicated, and that will go a long way towards improving what is proposed as the racial problem.
But the meaning of that article, and a few others of similar nature that have been written, to me is many (myself included) may have under-estimated Cuonzo as a candidate and what he can do here. Judging him just as a basketball coach and the resume he had compiled to date was too narrow. I do think there is some greatness within him, and he is the right person for the right job. The way he views life and the role he envisions himself playing at MU is more closely aligned to Norm Stewart than any other MU coach of my lifetime. Its been kind of striking that he views the games and practices as tools toward the larger purpose rather than the end results.
Its going to be really interesting to see how things develop for him at MU. My initial impression was he could be pretty good, and position MU back into a place that we could hire someone after him that was great. I think I've changed my opinion on that. I think with the right kind of support Martin can be great at MU, and MU can be great under Martin.
