Rarely does the first guy in a rebuild get to see the promised land himself. This isn't universal but is common enough to be a kind of truism in sports and in business and culture.
If it's a true rebuild and turnaround, the first guy uses so much energy turning out the old actors and takes on so much stink in losing that he himself becomes divisive and the successor to the turnaround guy becomes a unifying figure for these divided constituents.
Odom had to take on some important tasks - he's having to endure this weak and corrosive (and untalented) senior class and provide the internal by-example leadership that a strong senior class would normally provide. This may be hurting his ability to remain removed and act in a CEO-like role - and is instead requiring him to take on a rah-rah "we can do this" role.
But in that capacity I think it's possible he's missed some key parts of a rebuild - distilling and simplifying the program to a few core driving principles. And he's horribly whiffed on identifying leaders for his staff -- that can't be disputed.
