under performed in the tournament and had some bad years but we will never have a coach that did what he did for the length of time he did it. The thing to also keep in mind was that the tournament was once different than now. When he first started coaching, the teams in the tournament varied between 22 and 25 teams. Not every team got in and there were fewer easy 1st and 2nd round wins. Prior to 1975, only one team per conference could be in the NCAA tournament. As much as I hate kU, he had to play them every year and they are certainly considered one of the blue bloods. I would guess they almost always had higher ranked recruits than MU did. I have also read many stories how Norm did not get recruits like other teams because there were no cars or money exchanging hands to recruits. He told players that there would be none of that at MU. I am sure some of that happened but I highly doubt anywhere near like Kentucky, North Carolina or Kansas.
