in 1973, 1977, 1978, 1984, 1997 and 1998 - he won 17 games or less in each of those years.
In 1974 he tied for third in the Big 8 and won it in 1975.
In 1979 he tied for second in the Big 8 and won it four years in a row from 1980-1983, he won the Big 8 each year.
In 1999 he finished second in the Big 8.
Unless by "unacceptable" you didn't actually mean the coach should be fired.
