Alden knew the basketball program was going to be in trouble when he was making the hire. For whatever reason he was not going to (or wasn't allowed to) make the candidates aware of the potential sanctions. I'm also not sure he even knew what the specific sanctions would be but he knew the basketball team was going to get looked into.
My thinking is that the most important thing he was looking for in the search was someone who wasn't going to leave once they found out about the sanctions. I tend to agree because I would rather go through a typical coaching search this offseason (if it comes to that) than have had to find a replacement 2 years ago with a lack of scholarships to offer and even less excitement around the program than there was during the search that ended up with Anderson.
Nobody that was available and realistically would hvae taken the job at the time Anderson did could have had the team looking good enough by the time sacntions rolled around that they would have been ok eating some scholarships and playing the next 2 seasons with the roster already assembled.
