Maybe Norm had a few years of doing it.

That's doesn't mean that most of the team can't be made up of those types. And recruiting rankings don't always match the coaches evaluations.
In the freshman class the coaches zeroed in on Jackson over a top 100 STL guy pretty early.

Another example is Anunoby who was low 200's. Now considered a potential lottery pick after this season.
