There are two reasons for one off conversations:

1. To find out things that have to remain off the record.

"Don't hire Certa, we use to refer to him as 'the Serta Sleeper'".

"Trump will Scrooge you out anyway he can. Get as much money up front and don't leave a big bill at the end, you may never see that payment".

2. To muddy the water.

"Clinton's going to win, if we don't find some BS to create doubt".
