professional reference is not "word on the street"
Professional reference is at the bottom of a resume.
"word on the street" is finding someone who knows the applicant, and getting their off the record input.
I've had people who know me stop by and chat. Which they really want is a review of resumes. Anybody I know, good or bad.

And as the levels go lower, "word of mouth", becomes more important. You keep avoiding the fact we're talking about contractors, which don't have cushy corner offices.
Now lets talk about this bogus buellshyte that the just wrote.
NETWORKING is by far the way to get ANY contract or job.
In my 35yrs of contracting and job hunting, never has the generic approach of applying for a job and submitting a resume ever works.
It's either thru a headhunter or thru my contacts that I've landed jobs or work.
