As a Missouri fan who grew up in the Norm era and went to Mizzou in the late 1980s, it is frustrating to have Missouri struggling this badly in basketball. I am excited about the upcoming season. Why?
Terrence Phillips and Kevin Puryear strike me as leaders, and I can't say I have seen a good leader for our team since Laurence Bowers and Oriakhi left. I am no insider, so who know what goes on behind the scenes, but leadership matters. Anyone who has coached at all knows that the leader on your team matters.
I don't mean to put down Jabari Brown and Jordan Clarkson. Clearly, they were going through difficult family situations when they were Tigers. Our inability to be successful with two scorers of their caliber was disappointing. Haith did not establish a base for a successful program.
While I can't argue that Kim Anderson's two years have been satisfying, I do argue that he is doing the work of building a base that is not based on quick fixes. Unfortunately for Kim, he is attempting to do this in an era in which the quick fix is the expectation.
I hope and have some confidence that the group of Phillips, Puryear, Walton, Van Leer, and Barnett can lead us first to respectability and then to basketball success. Every player on this roster chose to come to the University of Missouri knowing Kim Anderson's style, demeanor, and expectations. I think matters.
Let's go Tigers. Have a productive trip to Italy. I'll be rooting for you.
