If you got rid of the NCAA then basketball becomes a lot more valuable to the conferences because they will get to keep all of the money from the Tourny.

The NCAA made 763 million off the NCAA tourny that year (tickets and tv). If you get rid of the NCAA then that money goes to conferences that fielded teams (most will be to the 4 confs of 16).
Obviously having a good basketball team becomes a lot more marketable in that scenario than it is now (since right now it is pretty much not even factored in when a conf looks at candidates). That is not to say bb will ever overtake FB but its value is being significantly hurt by having to fund the NCAA right now instead of going to the conferences.
