I edited the post to clarify that.
The point is that if next year is a good season and Gates wants his contract extended to 4+ years, the AD must demand that the buyout terms are first renegotiated.
Otherwise, an extension would lock us in to an unproven coach who could go 0-19 the next year. In other words, it would be prohibitively expensive to fire him, and that's obviously unacceptable.
