Gates another raise or extension, ever.
He's not a good enough coach to have a "100% guaranteed" buyout. That's for *proven* coaches like Mark Few, Bill Self, Bruce Pearl, etc... not guys who can go 0-19 and might need to be fired.
With a "100% guaranteed" buyout, we would owe the entire contract. So any (further) raise or extension would make it prohibitively expensive to fire him, and that's unacceptable.
It doesn't matter now, but it will matter when we eventually need to fire him *or* extend his contract.
Hypothetically, if we buy Gates another loaded roster and it takes him to the Sweet 16 or beyond, there would be pressure/expectations to give him a raise/extension. The AD would need to *insist* that the buyout terms are renegotiated to something more reasonable (e.g. owing 50% instead of 100%) before agreeing to any raise or extension.
