I would argue that they are still more important than they were pre-1965 because they do still factor into final rankings. That does not mean that fan interest is greater than it was back in those days, because it is clearly less. I think that may because there are so many bowls, and the bowls are very common place, and it is no longer as special as it used to be in addition to the fact that the playoff has reduced the value of the bowls.
