Lowered the importance of the majority of them. That has been exacerbated by the playoff.
A good number of the bowls really did mean something in the late 60s, through the 70s and 80s and the 90s. In that era, the national champion could even come from the Holiday bowl.
Bowls were originally truly an exhibition that had no value other than some pride.
Then, for a little over 30 years, they became very important because they were taken into consideration for national champions and final rankings.
Now, after the six playoff bowls, they are all back to being an exhibition, especially with all of the outs and transfers, they aren’t even really viable for considering final rankings. They are back to offering nothing other than some pride or conference bragging rights.
