The national champion was determined at the end of the regular season. No conference championships were allowed at the time. No bowl games. Just whatever you put on the field in your 10 (at the time) game schedule.

The bowl games were 100% exhibition then, and were far more important than they are now. Maybe not in determining who the champion was, but there was still a great deal of interest in these games.
