"Students" stormed the U.S. Embassy in Feb 1979 (10 months before the "real" hostage crisis) and took a US Marine hostage. Carter's ambassador vacated the embassy and turned it over to the attackers.
Carter did NOTHING to bolster the security of the embassy after that attack and the return of the embassy.
In the November attack that resulted in the hostages being taken, Carter's rules of engagement forbid the Marines from firing a shot to defend the embassy.
