challenged - that the judge alone has the authority to accept the plea.

You're reading too fast and not thinking.

This is NOT a case in which the defendant has strong evidence to show he is not guilty. this is an obviously guilty defendant throwing a hail mary and surprising the judge and the defendant has NO leverage and WANTS to avoid trial.
