the closer you book to the flight, the less selection you have, and different airlines will charge differently based on price and status for different seating sections. 95% of my flights are with Delta, for which I have high status so I get my pick of seats from the time I purchase.
Most airlines are killing their programs for casual fliers, so loyalty does not mean much unless you travel internationally or 20+ trips a year.
I can't really do Southwest for two reasons. First, they have very little in Minneapolis, and second, I fly to a lot of different airports, to which SW does not really have the network to do.
