And there’s no movement toward a mechanism (spending caps) that would allow them to do so.
I’m puzzled by private equity’s interest in college athletics.
Departments could be run more efficiently and turn a small profit, but if you cut budgets to get there then you run the risk of slipping in performance, which hurts the future value. Not something equity firms like either.
An efficiency expert would recommend only fielding men’s teams in football and basketball (and maybe baseball st a few schools) and then having just enough women’s sports to be Title IX compliant. That would mean an athletic department with about 8 sports and nobody has the guts to do that.
