Side of the Gates issue. But one thing about him that I am pretty sure I am convinced of is that anybody expecting him to be an X’s & O’s guru is going to be sorely disappointed.
His qualities appear to be recruiting and culture. And those are qualities that you can absolutely win with, and win big if you get them right. Strategy matters, and it matters more than a lot of people are willing to admit, but the strategy is only part of the teaching side of being a coach.
Think of it like Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions, everybody is crucifying him for his strategy, but he just had the best season that that team has had in almost 70 years because they found some good players and he fixed the culture.
One of the big reasons that Mizzou football did what they did this year and is garnering some of the attention that they are looking forward to next year, is because of the culture that Drinkwitz built.
I unquestionably give Gates next year, and almost certainly give him the year after that barring some really disastrous circumstances over the next 14 months. After that, I too will have a foot halfway up his ass if he isn’t prepared to make a run in the NCAA tournament.
