People's expectations have just changed. The house I grew up in was just over 800 sq ft for 4 people. Yes, in 1971 it was $18,000, or about $140k in today's dollars. Guess what, that house is currently for sale for $129k.

But that isn't good enough for families now. They need 2500+ sq ft mansions as a starter home. It's insane, and it is not sustainable.
