Jesus, I'm not even shocked anymore how poorly folks on this board understand the rules.
In a kicking situation, a player can wave their arms like a chicken dance, flail around like they are having a seizure, or anything else otherwise legal in a live play to INCLUDE giving a full valid fair catch signal and be afforded the full protection of the rule. HOWEVER, as soon as the ball hits the ground or touches another player the fair catch is void and all other rules then apply normally.
Which means dude can give the get away signal all he wants, ball hits the ground, he can pick it up at his discretion and danger and advance it.
And just for fun extra info, IF the ball first hits member of the kicking team and does not become dead, a member of the receiving team can then pick it up and advance it all the way up to the goal line and at ANY point during that advancement if they fumble it or lose possession of it, the receiving team still gets to keep the ball back at the spot of the first touching (High School) or illegal touching (NCAA/NFL). The only exception to this is an ensuing penalty of the receiving team after the FT/IT.
And one more someone obscure rule most don't know about. On a so called on-side kick. The kicking team may possess the ball after the 10 yards or if touched by the receiving team first before 10 yards, but they cannot advance it past the point of possession.
One thing that can happen but you'll never see it, is an onside kick, brief recovery by reciving team, long enough to constitute possession, fumble by receiving team, picked up by kicking team, and ball advanced to potential touchdown. That can be very bang bang, all within a second or 2.
So now maybe some folks have learned a few things they didn't know, and we can stop asking dumb questions and making silly assertions.
