There are other factors in recruiting to MU, as well. Some of them are historical and cultural. I can't think offhand of any other state in which its two largest cities were founded on two state lines and on two major rivers. As a result, many Missourians don't have the same allegiance to the state that people do in other states. That also makes it easier for recruiters from other states to swoop in and take the better in-state talent. Over time, the state of MO has become culturally varied. The west side is more Big 12 territory, and the south side has always leaned toward the SEC. But the north side and the StL area have strong Big 10 influences. The middle has generally been pro-MU regardless of conference. Having said all that, I think what it really comes down to for in-state recruits, is do they want to stay close to home or go someplace different? Do they want to play for an established, winning program or play somewhere that may offer them more of an opportunity? I think that's the basics of it, although NIL deals certainly are more of a factor now, too.
