But conservatism is an ideology, a belief system. Party affiliation is just membership in a group that can get you elected. Theoretically, Republicans are conservative. Theoretically.

If you say that the two ideologies are identical, that's inaccurate and frankly stupid.

Republicans tend to be spineless and stupid as a rule.
Democrats are hateful and devious.

But a conservative who is a progressive going the speed limit, is not a conservative.
