Lower paying job that offers other things in return. To do that I have to compare apples (pay) to oranges (other benefits).
Apples to apples decisions require no real thought because you are comparing the same quantities. Apples to oranges decisions are the tough ones, do I take a lower paying job that offers me a better chance at future advancement?
He is comparing something that is of almost zero concern to him to a complete unknown. Why would he take the chance on door number two if he is completely unconcerned about the virus?
It sounds like he is making a smart professional choice to me. Why would anyone care what choice he made? Either way that choice does not effect any of us.
