Maybe not a terrific one but I don't think anyone would dispute he is at least a legitimate D1 coach. Obviously if you go from not trying to trying you are going to see an improvement.
His hire happened to coincide with a once in a lifetime convergence of factors where the nation's #1 recruit was from Columbia and his father worked for MU and his aunt worked for MU and his sisters played for MU and he had wanted to play for MU but we had forced his hand and ended up driving him away to Washington. We removed the need for him to relocate to Washington and hired his dad to a million $ contract. As long as that scenario is also present the next time we hire a coach, I'm sure we will see a similar occurrence.
The answer to your question of how bad could the damage have been....almost immeasurable. Whatever is the largest measure of damage to a program...that is the answer.
