flu vaccine had been around since the 40s(thanks Jonas Salk) but had some set-backs in the 70s with some vaccines causing severe side effects, including death.
Probably gave the flu vaccine a bad reputation for quite a while.
I dont see any numbers, but I have to think that the flu vaccine wasn't put to widespread use in the USA until the late 90s, just looking at the death rates drastic decline circa 98, 99, 2000
