Some students do very well just watching a video and then doing a lesson but they are a small minority. Teaching is more about building a relationship with your students and understanding what motivates them and where their abilities lie. Online learning can do the last part and create and individualised program that meets a students needs. But what if cannot do is build a relationship with that student that allows program to motivate the kid when he does not feel like working or convince him that the assignment he just bombed was really just a couple of simple errors they made and not a complete inability to do the work.
I know it is cliche but teaching is both an art and a science. The science part is just knowledge of your subject matter and that is not that difficult too come by. The art comes from experience, knowing when to push and when to back off, knowing the common mistakes that will be made and attempting to fix them before they happen. The science part can be done by a program just as well, if not better, than a teacher could. The art part cannot even be attempted by a program.
