population now believe that the goal is to stop the outbreak and all deaths. That is a very different outcome than flattening the curve and it is completely unrealistic. The scary thing is that we have medical ‘experts’ pushing this thought.
The virus is still out there and as soon as we loosen our measures there will be a spike in cases. That is not debatable. But as soon as that happens you will see a widespread panic and demands for action.
What should be happening right now is a simple public information campaign.
First let people know that there will not be a vaccine any time soon, therefore we cannot eradicate this virus.
Second, start hammering the fact that waiting this out under lockdown is not feasible. The US economy cannot wait a year to a eighteen months to get restarted.
Third, when we start our transition there will be a spike in cases and an increase in deaths. We know this, we expect this and we are prepared to handle this. The goal is not to stop the virus but to make sure our health care system can handle the load.
Finally, we must stress preventative measures to stem the tide. Endangered populations should be encouraged to stay at home and limit contact as much as possible. Hygiene and social distancing should still be practiced.
In the short term we cannot defeat this virus, that does not mean that we cannot overcome it.
