third down is more important. Time of possession is more important.
A lot of people do not buy into ToP anymore, but there are absolutely circumstances where it is still very critical. One of the most obvious ones being when you have a bad or questionable defense. 1. Keep them off the field. 2. More rest helps out any defense for when they are on the field.
I like going fast...at times. But there are times when doing so is suicide. If you first down play gets less than 4 yards, you should never hurry up on second down. Going hurry up after a failed play only accelerates your failure. Going fast after a good play really puts the D on their heels.
