blew it via a misuse of the free will Our Lord, their Creator, gave them.

Jesus is the new Adam, Mary is the new Eve. Just as Our Lord created Adam and Eve perfected in grace, in the course of time He created Mary as perfected in grace, or as the angel Gabriel called her, You who have been perfected in grace:

Jesus, the New Adam and Mary, the New Eve, through their obedience gave back the graces to mankind that Adam and Eve had lost through their disobedience.

Some of the effects of their original disobedience, unfortunately, still remain... including most especially, the "concupiscence", the attraction to sin mankind is still afflicted with.
