It was introduced and available for purchase by the general public in 1964. The AR-15 (and its variants) have been involved in less than .0001% of all gun deaths and injuries in the US since then.
You can't make any sane argument why the weapon needs to be outlawed when in EVERY case of mass shooting using such a weapon, the law enforcement, parent/legal guardian and/or mental health professionals failed in their statutory duties to prevent the shooter from obtaining the weapon.
