If I recall it was after reading about how popular it was in Europe and it sounded intriguing. Supposedly a lot of people were doing it and a lot of doctors recommended it.
I was surprised that it didn't seem to be that big of a deal to me. My stomach would rumble a bit from time to time and I would think about grabbing something to eat out of habit, but then I would remember I had resolved not to & it was no big deal to continue on. It surprised me a little. It also highlighted how much time I saved by not doing stopping everything and either getting food or driving somewhere for lunch etc., and then potential clean up or driving back in addition to the actual time eating.
I have no doubt that it is a VERY different experience when you do it voluntarily, knowing full well that you could go eat if you really wanted to vs someone who literally has nothing to eat.
