Okay. It is spiritual deaths and resurrections. So with how the Bible is constructed, socio-policitcal forces, and everything else you mention:
Baptism is an example where you need to understand the viewpoints of the times. Originally a drowning ceremony. Death and resurrection.
John 12:24 - Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Death and resurrection.
Others are more directly pointing to dying to your earthly needs (ego). This helps you to grow and be resurrected spiritually. The Beatitudes have great examples of this. How else could Jesus say, "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven" ?
