most people were so beaten down that they just went along with the propaganda.

I really couldn't tell you why those special few felt the need to provide that steady drumbeat every day, tearing down Kim and his players. A guess would be that they're missing something crucial in their own lives and Kim was a convenient target for taking out some of their frustrations.
