Unless you accept either extreme....Fort Knox on one side...completely open border on the other side...it will always be a compromise. And, in my opinion, as you work towards a compromise..you have to look at your goals...what the potential threats could be...what the costs could be..what does success look like....what is value being gained or lost. Put those all together, and come up with a plan. As the details change, you then change the plan.
Taking either side to the logical extreme end point almost never works. Unfortunately, we are now in a society where government is controlled more by political points than actually solving problems...and on top of that, both sides spread lots of lies or mis-leading truths that having a discussion become impossible.
It is a sad reality of where we are today
