3 of us had a house for $450/month total. Had a fireplace where we could get cheap heat when we needed it in the winter, and used propane gas which we would fill up in July/August that would last a year...we were all animal science grad students so we would help in the meat lab and get plenty of beef and pork for free. I still have the freezer I bought when there 20 years ago
