candidates available, the "best" one in recent years has IMO not been in the 2 major parties. And hence ignored. Whether there's an EC or not, as long as the electorate has such a shallow and counterproductive ingrained view the country will potentially suffer for it.
IOW, the people who won't vote for a candidate they prefer because "they have no chance to win" are the underlying problem in getting the best one elected.
