I think California & New York would become MORE

They are key reasons why Hillary won the popular vote but lost the election.

The margins they voted for her relative to Trump votes were very large. But all of those excess votes over and above 50+% for her had no effect as to the number of electoral votes she received.

In states where Trump just barely won a majority he received ALL of their electoral votes (except for Maine, where he picked up one).

If the electoral college were abolished and we went with popular votes, those excess votes which overwhelmingly went to Hillary would have put her over the top.
